NEW YORK VIKING 1939 FIRST HARD BACK Very Good FAIR/GOOD
This is first edition and stated 'First Published In April 1939'. Tan/oatmeal boards show the lightest of shelf-wear on both front and back boards and all edges. All corners are firm and square, there are no bumps., The Hader line drawings are crisp and clean. There is light page edge soiling. Top page edge coloring is even and has no 'spotting'. There is a light, penciled inscription on the first flyleaf to first owner. It gives owner's name and simply states 'from John, April 1939'. We have had this inscription examined by several Steinbeck collectors and their opinion is that it 'may be Steinbeck's, but they're not certain'. This book is priced and being offered with the provision that the signature is NOT Steinbeck's. The dust jacket is graded fair'good, with some chips and a partial seperation af first flap. The 'First Edition' slug is present at lower right corner, as is the $2.75 price at upper right corner. The dust jacket is, of course, in an archival mylar protector. This book contains scarce stories many other publishers omit. This book includes: The Chrysanthemums, The White Quail, Fllight, The Snake, Breakfast, The Raid, The Harness, The Vigilante, Johnny Bear, The Murder, St. Kathy the Virgin, The Red Pony (all three parts), and the Leader of the People. There is foxing at gutter by both front and back boards. The corners are square and firm and there is nominal shelf-wear at the edges. We found no markings in the book. The tan boards are clean and the title lettering is crisp and clear. The brown top edge page coloring has no spots or flecks and is clean and even. The dustjacket is sunned and faded on spine. Front and back panels remain clean with sharp colors. The dustjacket has light wrinkling at top and bottom edges, with light chips at top spine and small closed tears at bottom spine.
