A very small stamp identifies this as from the Helena MT library. No other library markings. This book was the personal copy of the Honorable T.H. Carter, United States Senator from Montana, and donated in 1895 to the library. It is bound in full leather, with decorative tooling around outside edges of front and back boards and tooled dentelles. Lower corner of back board worn through at tip. There is general foxing associated with age. The red and black lables with gold-gilt titles are present and intact. The gilt titles are crisp and clear. The book has a wonderful shelf-presence. THIS BOOK COVERS THE GHOST-DANCE RELIGION AND THE SIOUX OUTBREAK OF 1890, WITH A SECTION DISCUSSING SITTING BULL AND WOUNDED KNEE. IT DETAILS THE CEREMONY OF THE GHOST DANCE AS IT APPLIES TO THE SIOUX, THE CHEYENNE, ARAPAHO, THE KIOWA AND KIOWA APACHE. THE DESCRIPTIONS INCLUDE THE SONGS, THE PREPARATION FOR THE DANCE AND THE PAINTING OF THE DANCERS. THE SECTION ON WOUNDED KNEE INCLUDES THE LEGENDARY INDIAN STORY OF WOUNDED KNEE, AS WELL AS A MAP OF THE BATTLEFIELD. ALSO INCLUDED ARE ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE BATTLEFIELD, THE BURYING OF THE DEAD AND THE GRAVES. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE ALMOST 100 MAPS AND ILLUSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK, MANY IN COLOR. THIS IS A CONTEMPORARY-TO-THE-TIMES ACCOUNT OF THIS FAMOUS AND CRITICAL JUNCTURE OF AMERICAN AND INDIAN HISTORY. THIS IS AN EX-LIB BOOK. WE HAVE COLLATED THE BOOK AND IT IS COMPLETE. THERE ARE SOME TEARS AND CHIPS NOT AFFECTING THE TEXT OR PICTURES. THERE IS SOME LIGHT WATER STAINING ON THE LOWER FRONT EDGES ON ABOUT THE LAST 100 PAGES. THE BOARDS ARE TAPED AND WORN AND SEPARATING. STILL, THIS IS A SCARCE PART TWO OF THE TWO PART EDITION THAT DISCUSSES WOUNDED KNEE AND THE SIOUX. PHOTOS AVAILABLE.
